Iranian researcher Mohammed Saleh Sedghian discussed the January 3, 2025 capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in a January 4 appearance on Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar). He said that such a scenario was unlikely to be repeated in Iran, due to Iran’s large territory and its geostrategic positions. Sedghian added that Russia has now abandoned its friend for a second time, after it failed to come to the aid of the former Syrian regime and allowed it to collapse and fall into the hands of Al-Sharaa. He further said that there are rumors alleging American-Russian cooperation in Maduro’s arrest.

Mohammed Saleh Sedghian: “It is difficult to imagine a similar operation taking place in Iran. Iran’s territory is vast, almost 1.65 million square kilometers.

“I believe that due to [Iran’s] geopolitical and geostrategic location, it would be difficult from Trump to implement the same scenario in Iran.

“Venezuela is one of Russia’s allies and friends, but this is the second time that Russia abandons its friends.”

First, it abandoned its friend, Bashar Al-Assad. The former Syrian regime had had significant cooperation with Russia. This is now the second time.

“In addition, as you’ve said, there are rumors about American-Russian cooperation in the arrest of Venezuela’s President Maduro.”
