Iran Defends Anti-Terror Military Operation in Iraq, Syria

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UN Amir Saeed Iravani said that the recent missile attacks against the Israeli Mossad spy agency headquarters in Iraq and the Daesh (aka ISIS or ISIL) terror group in Syria were in full compliance with Tehran’s international obligations, stressing the action was necessary and proportionate.

Iravani penned a letter to the world body’s Security Council on Tuesday, stating the military operations had been conducted in line with Iran’s “inherent right of self-defense under international law and the Charter of the United Nations.”

“The operations were necessary and proportionate, precisely targeting bases of terror groups and fully respecting Iran’s international obligations, especially international humanitarian law,” he added.

“Iran reiterates its inherent rights, as recognized by international law, to safeguard its sovereignty, national security, and its citizens against any threats or attacks,” the envoy underscored.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced in a Tuesday statement it has fired several ballistic missiles towards a Daesh base in Syria and a stronghold of the Israeli spy service Mossad in Iraq on Monday, in retaliation for the recent bombings in Kerman province and the assassinations of the resistance front’s commanders by the Zionist regime.

The IRGC said in a statement a total of 24 ballistic missiles were fired during the operation, all of which precisely hit and destroyed the designated targets.

It noted the force fired four Kheibar Shekan (fortress buster) missiles from Iran’s Southwestern province of Khuzestan to Idlib, adding that four missiles were launched from the west, and seven more from the Northwest of the country to an espionage center of the Israeli regime’s Mossad spy agency in Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.

Nine missiles were fired at locations of other terrorist groups in various areas of Syria, the statement read.

The letter underlined Tehran’s “unwavering commitment” to fully respecting the national sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Iraq and Syria.
