On the morning of 06 September, a vehicle charged two National Guards at Akouda-El Kantaoui crossing just north of Sousse, killing one guard and wounding the other.
The three jihadists in the vehicle were killed after being surrounded at a primary school nearby and gunfire exchanged. Two of the assailants were brothers aged 25 & 19 from the Akouda area one worked at an aluminum factory; the other worked at a vocational training center. Investigators reported that the suspects were wearing clothing associated with Islamic State and at least one gun, cell phones, memory cards and knives were found in their possession.
Two months ago security forces busted a ‘jihadist’ cell stretching from Sousse, to Kasserine to Gabes plotting attacks on state institutions and security patrols. In May and April of Islamic State operatives were arrested actively planning attacks on security installations in Tunisia.
